IoT connectivity for healthcare related devices is a small but growing opportunity. It is estimated that the total number of patients remotely monitored through SIM-based IoT connections at 4.7m at the end of 2015, and we expect this to grow to nearly 18m in 2020, representing a CAGR of 31%. It also enables constant, secure, near real-time monitoring as well as patient-to-physician communications (voice, messaging or video).

Standard core telecommunications services such as voice, messaging and connectivity, but also increasingly cloud, big data and analytics, and security are important in the B2B healthcare market, both in emerging but mainly developed markets. Furthermore, some MNOs are also offering specialized B2B healthcare value-added services including telemedicine, secure storage, archiving, analytics, information exchange, billing and information systems for hospitals and clinics. However, such services require a long term commitment and/or specialist capabilities typically only accessible through acquisition.

In the B2C segment, some operators offer wellness and fitness devices as well as fitness-related apps, while increasingly the senior segment can be addressed through specialist handsets and other devices and services. Furthermore, as the smart home opportunity grows, an important segment related to home-care based services such as fall detection, automatic lights and emergency alarms, offered through IoT connectivity will emerge.
