POCT, also called near-patient testing, is performed outside a clinical laboratory. It helps in making fast clinical decisions, and hence in administrating appropriate treatments and medication. POCT is gaining popularity due to the increasing incidence and prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. It is generally cost-effective and user-friendly. POCT devices are standardized to minimize errors during the diagnosis of patients. POCT plays a major role in improving patients' quality of life.

The methods of POCT include meters or monitors and strips. The POCT diagnostic devices are of two types: bedside and near-bedside monitoring devices. The bedside POCT devices are small and offer mobility whereas the near-bedside POCT devices are large and complex. These devices are used to test cardiac biomarkers, blood coagulation, platelet function, HIV, hemoglobin concentration, ad five-part differential blood count.
