SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS

The $13.0 billion U.S. roofing product industry has seen slower growth since U.S. housing demand turned downward. However, the roofing market remains a growing sector of the domestic building materials industry. Inroads benefited from continued gains in nonresidential construction spending, growing demand for higher value roofing products, and expanding export shipments. These positive developments have given a boost to industry profit margins. Margins have also benefited from the pass through of rising material costs and improved labor productivity. Roofing manufacturers are able to pass through rising material costs due to the concentrated nature of this market. Shipments are expected to decline during 2009 as nonresidential construction spending declines due to the sharp drop in corporate profits. However, Federal government monetary and fiscal stimulus programs are expected to lead to a recovery in shipments beginning in 2010. The Federal government is also expanding programs that promote building energy efficiency. Roofing product manufacturers will benefit from these programs.

ROOFING PRODUCT INDUSTRY TRENDS

Catalina Research uncovered these trends in our 211-page in-depth report on the U.S. roofing product industry. Report sections cover the U.S. market for asphalt roofing shingles, other prepared asphalt roofing products and coating materials, metal roofing and roof drainage equipment, single-ply plastic and rubber membrane roofing, and precast concrete and clay roofing tiles. In the Executive Summary section, Catalina conducts a growth analysis for four market sectors and 12 product lines. A comparative analysis of product price growth trends is also included. The U.S. roofing business is segmented by residential and nonresidential markets and new construction and reroofing and repair jobs.

ROOFING PRODUCT SHIPMENTS AND MARKET TRENDS

Each product section includes detailed U.S. shipment trends. For example, the asphalt roofing product section covers shipments of roofing asphalts, coatings, and cements; asphalt shingles; roll roofing and cap sheets; modified bitumen membranes; and roofing felt and other asphalt roofing products. The number of U.S. manufacturers is provided for each product line, as well as import shipments. Product and material input price trends are included as well. In addition, Catalina analyzes the cost structure and profitability of plants specializing in asphalt roofing, metal roofing and roof drainage equipment, and clay roofing tiles. Export trends for select products and an analysis of the Canadian market is provided in a separate section.

ROOFING CONTRACTOR BUSINESS TRENDS

U.S. Department of Commerce roofing contractor survey data was compiled, calculated, analyzed, estimated and forecasted. Data trends include total revenues, number of contractors, material purchases, the labor situation, and regional and state markets. In addition, Catalina analyzed the shipments and usage of photovoltaic solar electric generation systems in the United States in order to uncover the sales opportunities in cool roofing installations and roofing materials incorporating solar cells.

RESIDENTIAL ROOFING IMPROVEMENT MARKET AND FACTORS DRIVING DEMAND

Reroofing and repair spending is analyzed for all residential property owners. Homeowner spending is further segmented for contractor projects and D-I-Y and B-I-Y purchases. In addition, homeowner roofing and gutter spending is evaluated by demographic characteristic. An analysis of factors effecting demand included data trends on spending on new residential and nonresidential building construction, total housing demand, housing starts and permits, housing demand by region and state, residential remodeling and repair spending, mortgage interest rates, other housing characteristics and demographic trends, and number and size of U.S. commercial buildings.

COMPETITVE ENVIRONMENT

Catalina Research profiled 27 North American manufacturers and marketers of roofing products. Catalina compiled data and information from public company filing documents, trade journals, and databases, including data and information on new products, manufacturing and distribution, acquisitions and capital investments, and sales trends. Sales data was used to compute market shares for the top six manufacturers. The goal is to uncover manufacturer strategies that are being implemented to make inroads in this dynamic market, including development of products to improve building energy efficiency.
