The functional beverage market has enjoyed considerable growth over the past decade. From the original energy drinks, which have their roots in products first developed in the early 20th century, the industry now caters to increasingly complex consumer demand for products with specific health benefits. This report provides an in-depth analysis of the ingredients being used in functional drinks.

  • Understand how each of the major food functional drinks segments are innovating in terms of ingredient formulations.
  • Analyze market values and volumes for the energy, sports and nutraceutical drink segments.

Highlights

The global functional drinks industry is dominated by the developed markets. Worth $21.0bn in 2010, the US makes up the vast majority of the America's market value. Likewise the Asia Pacific is dominated by Japan and China. The industry is ready to gain greater traction in developing markets.

Originally, energy drinks derived their benefits from the large amount of sugar in the drinks. Over time, and with an increasing focus on weight management, low sugar variants have been launched. As a consequence, other ingredients such as stimulants (e.g. caffeine), vitamins, and herbal extracts have become the most critical components.

Over the last few years, cognitive health and digestive health have been the most commonly targeted health areas by nutraceutical drinks. Interestingly manufacturers have thus far struggled to incorporate omega-3 fatty acids, which are a staple of other categories that target cognitive health, such as dairy.
